Explanations of 5 of my Interests, selected by [livejournal.com profile] girlupnorth

* arthurian legend - When I was in eighth grade, I wrote a 20 page term paper about different versions of the Arthur Myth (focusing especially on the portrayal of adultery) and sometimes I feel like the same impulse that caused me to be interested in that is what makes us all interested in fandom. You have this root idea of something but it's represented a thousand different ways. And the legend is of course excellent fodder for this because it is so epic, so sprawling, I cannot imagine that anyone would be able to remember every character contained within. So we take a piece and we fill it out and suddenly we understand things in a new light and we care about a character who was just a name until then. I would be lying if I said that The Mists of Avalon didn't play a big role in this interest forming, but I also recall reading a YA series about Gueneviere and the Mary Stewart series at about the same time, among others.

* brutus/mark antony - I'm really sad that no one will write me this pairing or point me in the direction of something that's been written about it. In 2000 years I would think someone would have gotten around to it. I'm usually not a boyslasher, but this pairing includes one of my favorite elements, which is the being bound together by a common (lost) loved one. Obviously in this case that person is Caesar, because who loves him more than these two... Brutus who betrays him and Antony who avenges him, but both utterly consumed by this earth shaking man. So there's this common bond but at the same time antagonism and conflict which makes it interesting and compelling.

* making lists - I love making lists and find it really calming and relaxing. In fact I will make lists of random crap to get myself to calm down from freak outs or enough to fall asleep. It's a little way to create some order in the universe. And isn't that why I like meme's like this and interests lists in general?

* not watching supernatural - Given the predominance of this show in fandom at large, we felt it needed to be said. Also it's my way of telling people that the omission is intentional and that I do not want them to pimp the damned thing to me or tell me why I should be watching it. I will never watch Supernatural, not ever, and you cannot make me. For me, it stands for everything that is loathsome.

*supertext - The opposite of subtext.

Explanations of 5 of my lj tags, chosen by [livejournal.com profile] syderia

*omg i have a life! - This is my tag for talking about IRL stuff like going places or hanging out with people. I named it this way when doing anything other than work, school, and the internet, was rare and it remains applicable because often on fannish ljs we just forget to mention big life events and people that are important. So things seem sudden or surprising to my flist, even though they might have known me a long time.

*tarot- I love tarot, although I use it more as a tool for introspection and processing things than for prediction. Also I really just love it for the iconic element and the symbols and system of organization. I currently possess 4 decks:
The Goddess Tarot - Given to me on my 15th birthday "by my brother" (my mom bought it but he picked it out), this was my first tarot deck. It was a really lovely choice and I still am fond of it, despite its tendency to be overly positive and talk about "The divine feminine".
Legend: Arthurian Tarot - Not to be confused with the regular old "Arthurian Tarot", this deck was one that was dead on from the first spread. It's gorgeous, and basically I picked it out and my mom bought it for me (because you can't buy your own tarot decks)when I was about 20 and I've really loved it ever since.
The Golden Tarot - [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix found this deck to be mean and judgey so she handed it off to me. I find it to be simplistic and literal but sort of like that and we've found it is much better for reading someone else's cards than just doing your own because of that.
The Archeon Tarot - I'd admired this deck for a while online and then saw in in the case at our local game shop a few months back and stated as much, so Jeremy bought it for me. At first I was worried that the sort of risque look was going to end up being misogynistic but so far it's just totally gorgeous and evocative. I finally used it a few days ago, and the results are in are recorded under the cut tag later in this entry. It's definitely pushing for favorite though.

*regina spektor - I seriously love Regina Spektor. I took an embarrassingly long time to pay attention to [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields on this subject, but once I did I was totally hooked. She ranges from sublime to gritty and just has a such a wide spectrum and yet is always so intimately personal and yet grand. I've seen her live twice and both times she was adorable and amazing and even better than recorded, which is rare. I don't talk aobut music much in this lj, but it used to be really important to me and ocasionally an artist like Regina makes me feel like it still it.

*pseudo incest - People whose parents are married, those who think they are related but turn out not to be. It's a fairly common trope in fiction and it provides a great setup for tension, like in Veronica Mars when she and Duncan think they are brother and sister and feel totally conflicted about that they still have feelings for each other. Or the fact that Maeby and George Michael are cousins but it's constantly in question as to whether they actually are for one reason or another. It's a way to play with the incest taboo without committing.

*consumerism - I usually use this tag to talk about shopping and/or gifts because I fell weird about it. Especially all the branding. So basically I feel like a consumerist whore but labeling the discussion as such makes me feel better and honest. And then I go and enjoy my Carlos Santana shoes and my overpriced DVD box sets.

So I finally tried doing a reading with my new Tarot Deck on Sunday, and it seemed pretty relevant. )
lodessa: lol (torchwood-jack-would hit that)
1)I may have watched this vid again 3 times last night (during the hour I was home before passing out) and once this morning before leaving for work at 6AM. Seriously guys, it's amazing. Even if you don't like Ten, maybe especially if you don't like Ten you should watch it (and I mean that in the way of you will probably enjoy it more than anyone else, not in the you will like it and it will convert you way).

2)Also you should all check out Tiny Art Director, a blog in which an artist takes commissions from his toddler daughter and records the results (including her reaction to them). It is absolutely hilarious.

3)Yesterday we were lazy (read:exhausted) enough to go pick up salads from Jack's. Jeremy got a taco salad and I did the build your own with:romaine, ranch, croutons, carrots, peas, corn, cranberries, and apples. So I was sitting there, eating it, and thinking about how much better their ranch is than anything I can buy in a bottle and was thinking that I know you can make your own and maybe I could find a way to get the good kind at home. I like my ranch creamy and liquidly as opposed to gloppy and thick, creamy as opposed to mayonnaisey (Denny's has pretty much my platonic ideal of ranch)... does anyone know how to get that at home?

4) No one responded to my lj tag meme so I am linking here in hopes that you guys just missed it.
lodessa: lol (torchwood)
1) I totally hate work. I am tired of being everyone's bitch. I am tired of my lack of motivation. I am tired of pretending things are other than this.

2) I may have uploaded about two to three times as many Torchwood icons as I actually want today. I will delete/change most of them out in the next few weeks I am sure, but I couldn't resist the shiny.

3) I still need to find Robin Hoodie icons, but may wait until next week as the season 2 dvds are coming via netflix today and I don't want to be spoiled (I mean more than the obvious). If anyone has suggestions for good icon makers in the fandom I'd love suggestions though. I am looking for ones with interesting(and not ugly) text and all I am turning up are either beautiful but useless icons or ones with ugly and/or stupid text.

4)Today is a great day for Doctor Who vids, I seriously recommend:

[livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro's Shut up and Drive (Martha > You).
[livejournal.com profile] flummery's Handlebars (Ten's cause is noble and his motives are pure but yikes).

5)Meme, sort of stolen from [livejournal.com profile] entrangere: Pick any 5 of my livejournal tags and I will explain them. Then, repost, if you want, so that I can do the same for you.

meme, frome [livejournal.com profile] blue_blazes:
Comment on this post and I will choose seven interests from your profile. You will then explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

archetypes I'm really into archetypes, not so much in the Jungian sense as just they way that our ideas about certain types of characters interact with the actual reutilization of them in any work of fiction, and actually life itself. We frame all our experiences in terms of this kind of shorthand.

ass is timeless One time [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix, [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields and I went to see a play that my sister, in addition to being in, had costumed. The director had wanted the look to be "timeless" and my sister had come up with the idea that dance clothes are pretty timeless and so everyone was basically wearing leotards with various translucent additions. So there was a lot of viewing of people's asses involved, when this was commented on my sister tried to explain why, and well she only got as far as "Well the concept was supposed to be timeless..." before it was agreed upon that yes, ass is timeless. And it is.

Chaplain Tappman "It was love at first sight." I love Catch-22 and I love the character of the poor harassed Chaplain, constantly being picked on and stressing out about his wife.

cyberpunk staples I haven't read much cyberpunk, and it isn't a genre I expected to be into, but I've read Snowcrash and Neuromancer, which are staples of the genre and I absolutely loved both of them.

existentialism I was introduced to existentialism really in my sophomore year of college and I've always found it really in line with my own experience of the world. Just last week I was reading some Sartre short stories and really feeling blown away by his depiction of how things can see unreal and you feel like you are pretending to be yourself. Generally, existentialism is about being responsible for your own experience of life and I approve of that.

no choking it better! This interest indebted to Narnia RFP (among other fandoms) belief in the value of "raping it better". It drives me batty when people write sexual violation fixing sexual violation. [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields was responsible for showing us the atrocity that caused the coining of the term. Then there was the whole incident with Isiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey and the choking that happened thanks to the prior's homophobic slur towards T.R. Knight. [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and I knew right away that there was going to be slashy RPF about Dempsey and Knight and I groaned thinking about the inevitable choking it better that was sure to occur in some of those fics.

Victorian lesbian vampires Mainly this is a reference to Carmilla which I read right around the same time as Dracula and was blown away by. This book seriously has all the best things about the era.

It occurs to me that I added some people before I left for vacation and haven't really gotten to know them at all. So Meme:

Ask me one fannish and one non-fannish question. I will answer both and ask you one of each as well.
lodessa: lol (bones-booth)
Last night my dad was over, and he, my sister, and I decided to take walk. My town is strewn with interconnecting bike paths and we had probably been walking close to an hour when we come across an adorable black cat, probably about 9 months old. It had a collar with a bell on it and wanted to be pet and rub against us. So we pet it a little and then decided to head back. The cat followed us. We were surprised after a block when it crossed the street and continued to follow, mewing if we got too far ahead. After about a mile we were concerned, we checked it's collar for tags, but there were none. Who puts a collar on their cat but no tags? The cat was obviously lost, but it was not until it followed us across an overpass over one of the main streets that we finally picked it up and carried in the last few blocks. It's possible that it has a chip in it, so we should take it in to see. If not, we need to find it a home though. Apparently Robert and Steve are looking for a cat, or I suspect it would get on well at mom's because Sunny loves cats and Ernest is a really really mellow cat who thinks he is a dog possibly. Right now it is at home with Cupcake though, and we will be lucky if they don't tear the house fighting. I am sort of in love with this cat and wish they would be friends, but I know it would never happen.

On a completely different note: [livejournal.com profile] novin_ha wrote If There Were Water, a beautiful, post-NFA AtS fic about Faith, Wes, and Illyria. It's really true to all the characters and the world. It's bitter, caustic, and broken, but it leaves a faintly sweet aftertaste. I suggest you all read it.

I'm sure you're Ashamed enough to understand That Santa doesn't exist.

ETA - Handwriting meme (tagged by [profile] endilwen_09 )

Handwrite the following:
1. Your username/name.
2. Left-handed or right-handed?
3. Favourite letters to write?
4. Least favourite letters to write?
5. Write "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog".
6. Tag 5 people.

lodessa: lol (dr. who-mickey/rose)
First I have sort of an awkward question/request to make. I'm writing a story right now that is contains a number non-white characters (African American, some of whom are of mixed parentage) and I'm finding myself terrified of putting my foot in my mouth and saying something stupid, stereotypical, or just generally offensive, in relation to their ethnicity and at the same time not wanting to just ignore it. So I was sort of hoping that maybe someone on my flist who would define themselves as being of said racial category might be willing to talk me through it a little.

Now: Two memes!

[livejournal.com profile] assymbia posted a Shakespeare meme earlier and that got me thinking about Shakespeare in general and so a Shakesperian meme of my own:

Comment with a character from one of Shakespeare's plays and I will reply with 3 facts from my personal canon about them. (If I haven't read/seen the play I reserve the right to ask you for a different one... additionally the link has me replying with my stats so you can check that if you want something from an obscure one.)

The apocalypse meme as stolen from [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields (both of whose responses are well worth reading).

Fill in the blanks, and I will attempt to fic it:

Three things _____ did after the world ended by _____.

e.g. Three things Toby Flenderson did after the world ended by nuclear attack.
e.g. Three things Luna Lovegood did after the world ended by clowns.

Suggested Fandoms (This is just a starting place, I'll try anything [regardless of format] that I know):

A Song of Ice and Fire
Doctor Who (New)
Veronica Mars
30 Rock
Arrested Development
The Office
BSG (because I just re-watched the mini [which is totally more depressing out of context, btw].)
lodessa: lol (ugly betty-rich white boy pain)
1)Hi all. I am getting back on the workout and eating better path and will probably start talking about it again. I've added a number of new people since the last time I asked about this and some of you may have changed your feelings on the subject. So I'm polling to see who wants to be on the filter. If you are on the current one and don't respond I will leave you on and I don't auto add anyone. I may occasionally talk about these subject outside of the filter but primarily I try and keep it under there as this is a subject that is sensitive for a lot of people.

[Poll #1148729]

2) [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns posted about "Technological Sabbath" which I found really interesting. I don't generally check my internet on the weekends much (surfing 40 hours a week is plenty for me) but I am thinking about taking on the TV/DVD/Video Games aspect of my technological dependency. Maybe then I'd get some reading done and a little space to think.

3) Last night I watched the season 2 premiere and the Eliza Dushku episode of Ugly Betty. I still adore this show, which balances horrible over the top cliche and heartfelt earnest emotion. That isn't why I stopped watching it; I stopped watching it because it was pleasant but it didn't add anything to my life and I was spending too much time in front of the TV. That reason still stands. I still feel really warm and fuzzy about it though. Also... Eliza is still ridiculously pretty.

4) Meme Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] etrangere:

Name a character I write [am familiar with] and I'll tell you how s/he lost her/his virginity.
lodessa: lol (soiaf-waking the dragon)
For those of you who have not seen it. [livejournal.com profile] etrangere has a post on Westerosi Tarot that is incredibly insightful located here.

1) Sansa Stark
2) Jon Snow
3) Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish
4) Brienne of Tarth
5) Jaime Lannister
6) Queen of Thorns
7) Stannis Baratheon
8) Danaerys Targaryen
9) Tyrion Lannister
10) Asha Greyjoy
11) Loras Tyrell
12) Robb Stark

2) Sign Ups are still open at [livejournal.com profile] asoiaf_equinox for another week. Please sign up so I don't feel like a loser... also because it will be fun I promise.

3) Wednesday night I read A Gathering of Gargoyles, the second book in Meredith Ann Pierce's Darkangel trilogy. Boyfriend should be bringing the last one home. In the mean time I am reading Closing Time some more. It still reads like amazing fanfic for Catch-22 written by someone who also loves Vonnegut and keeps flirting with the idea of a crossover.

Meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] etrangere

1)Give me a character from any fandom you know I am into and I will tell you:

a. My favorite thing about that character.
b. My least favorite thing about that character.
c. One person I would ship them with in their own verse.
d. One crossover ship for them I think would be neat.

2) I realize I've never done that meme where people request pictures of things in your place of living (books, tea collection, shoes, the view from your computer, etc.) and you upload them. So ask way.

Meme: You pick a scenario and a fandom. I will pick a pairing.
lodessa: lol (soiaf-are we there yet?)
Meme Adaptation Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] unanon

Pick a fandom you know I know about, and I’ll tell you:
1. The first character I first fell in love with
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer
6. The character I would shag anytime 7.
The character I’d want to be like
8. The character I’d slap
9. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise

I've done this already...probably more than once. It's time for a different list:
1. The character most likely to fall in love with the wrong person
2. The character whom I'm embarrassed to admit I adore
3. The character that would send me screaming in the opposite direction IRL despite being fascinating in fiction.
4. The character with the most annoying personality quirks
5. The character I most admire and why
6. The character with the worst temper
7. The character most likely to fail at everything
8. The pairings I prefer in canon
9. The pairings I prefer in fanon
10. The character with the most personal growth in canon
lodessa: lol (btvs-and then they had sex)
Make a list of all the characters in your icons. (Although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetize it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing. Etc. Then write your reaction to each pairing (or a snippet of a hypothetical fic featuring each pairing).

too much of a multi-fandom ho sometimes )

These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users. As usual, bold what you have read, italicise what you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. Add an asterisk [*] to those you've read more than once. Underline those on your to-read list.

The List )

In conclusion: Ariel cares very little about "contemporary literature" and likes a lot of stuff that people find hard/boring.
