lodessa: brienne, the loathly maiden (asoiaf)
On reviewing the appendixi for different A Song of Ice and Fire volumes to try and determine exactly how much time has actually passed since you can't use seasons to judge time passage:

"Uh oh, apparently GRRM can't do math any more than JKR."

Kids' ages in each book's appendix for the Stark, Baratheon/Lannister, and Arryn families )

Overall:

Robb ages from 14 to 16 (2 years)
Sansa ages from 11 to 12 by the third book and then goes unspecified (1+ years)
Arya goes from 9 to 11 (2 years)
Bran goes from 7 to 9 (2 years)
Rickon goes from 3 to 4 years (1 year)

Joffery goes from 12 to 13 and then back to 12 again (effectively no years)
Mrycella goes from 8 to 9 (1 year)
Tommen goes from 7 to 8 (1 year)

Robert Arryn goes from 6 to 8 between the first and second books and stays there (2 years)

Since Robert Arryn ages two years in that first jump and everyone else 1, we have to assume that the first book covers a little over a year. But then all the Stark children including Robb age years over all except for little Rickon, but the Lannister children only one, except for Joffery who gain no years overall. Birthdays could account for all of this except for Joffery's mysterious redacted year, except that it seems odd that one book took over a year and other three combined less than one... and then we get to the issue of spoilers )

I guess technically it is all possible (with the exception of the Joffery thing) and only goes to show us that each progressive book gives us more detail and less movement. Still, given how long travel takes seemingly and a certain impression of time spent, such as spoilers ) it seems odd that so little time would have passed.

I have no idea why my WoW Downdloader takes exponentially longer to download that Jeremy's since we are on the same internet/router. The app always says I appear to be behind a firewall. I keep coming back to the mac firewall issue, but I have it on the "allow all" setting so I don't know what else I can do since for whatever reason the preferences and debilitatingly simple and obvious. Googling just finds others bitching and advice to do... well what I already have. At this rate I won't be able to play until tomorrow!

I stayed up until 3AM writing Jaime/Brienne smut against my better judgment. It is not quite done and I am totally unsure if it is postable. In Harry Potter fandom I would have posted it no problem and people would have been into it. Actually in a lot of fandoms it would be a hit. But I feel like we have higher standards in ASOIAF fandom. I really just don't know if it is good or terrible or whatever. I feel like I've lost my writing compass.

Also the landscapers are outside and their leaf blowers and making bits of something hit my windows angrily.

Generally i am just feeling full of foreboding and possibly it is my hormone cycle happening ( I will know in two days if so). That or the cat cursed me with doom. Either seems equally likely.

Flist, link things of glee to me.

1. Attention to everyone who watches or ever has watched Grey's Anatomy. It's been almost a year and a half that I've been clean but there's this plot bunny that largely involves one Alex Karev and I am finding that I don't remember as much as I would like. So dear, dear, friends: help a fangirl out. Please remind me about any of his back story you remember, particularly any details about the whole growing up on bars/nightclubs because of musician father bit. (Anonymous comments are as always enabled, so feel free to use them if the shame of admitting you remember/ever knew is too much.)

2. [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix has followed up her post about BSG and Captain Planet with a possibly even better one about Torchwood and Captain Planet". Both posts are sheer brilliance.

3. There 4 More days left to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] asoiaf_equinox. Come on flist, if you guys don't want to signup for my fic exchange what does that say about my ability to run one? (To those of you who already have, you are the best.)

4) Of my unfinished/planned fics I am now realizing that over half of them are crossovers at this point. When did I start having so many crossover bunnies?

1. Monday night, [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix flaked out on watching Bones with me. It was okay though because she was writing her [livejournal.com profile] asoiaf_equinox fic:

Somewhat spoilery reactions to 'Player under Pressure' (mostly bitching about it not airing till now)  )

2. Tuesday night, we watched episodes 4x02 and 4x03 of Doctor Who at last. Non-spoilerly reactions (comments to this post may contain spoilers though):
* Ten's emo seems expand with the growth of his hair.
* Donna is a great choice of character to follow up Martha and Rose. I love that she is an independent adult. If Rose was Heart and Martha was Head... Donna is perhaps Will.
* [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and I loved Quintus and his short little sacrilegious purple toga.
* This reminded us that Brutus and Mark Antony are totally having hatesex and we are sad that NO ONE has written about it for us.
* We want to hire that chick to do our PR. We are not sure for what, but we were impressed with her skills.
* The promo for this week, made me so excited. I am such a fucking fangirl for a certain champion of Earth.

3. Last night, after arguing with my therapist about semantics, we went out to celebrate [livejournal.com profile] actoplasm's promotion. He didn't get off till 8 and 9 is Jeremy's bedtime for work nights so we were just going to have drinks and appetizers with them and then go and let them finish their dinner alone... but it smelled good so I got mushroom ravioli in a ginger cream sauce and Jeremy got a giant chicken caesar salad. We also modified the "Red Carpet" (one of their specialty drinks: Pomegranate Liqueur, Vodka, Triple-Sec, Sweet and Sour, and Soda) to replace the Soda with their homemade ginger ale, which really killed the not so great vodka aftertaste (they make notoriously strong drinks). We called it the "Ginger Carpet"... which sounded dirty and reminded me of Doctor Who and my theory that he is hanging out with Donna partly because if you can't BE a ginger then you can at least be WITH one, right? It was so good I had two, and then we forgot to order dessert but [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix wanted some so we went over to the Czechoslovakian place's bar, where they serve Princess Cake and make the best Mojitos in town (seriously I don't even bother getting them elsewhere in the area because they always disappoint). We did not get to bed until 11, and have plans to do Happy Hour today in honor of [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix's last day of actual class in law school. Also in honor of cheap appetizers.

4. This week I have written 3 Song of Ice and Fire fics (Well, 2 1/2 fics and 1 ficlet) and I am actually pretty happy with the completed ones for the first time in months. I've even been getting betaed again for the first time in a while.

5. Saturday we leave for Southern California and will not be back until Thursday or Friday of next week. I am so excited to get away and not go to work.
lodessa: lol (soiaf-jaime/brienne-in bed)
1) I am really behind on my flist, but I had a great weekend:

a) Geeky Friday night of BSG and World of Warcraft with Jeremy and my brother.
b) Delicious homemade Macaroni and Cheese I had been craving but not making for a while.
c) A state of the union conversation with Jeremy that actually went somewhere.
d) Actually doing the laundry Saturday morning, and folding it.
e) Udon, Tempura, and Pot Stickers with Jeremy and [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix for Saturday's late lunch.
f) Some walking around on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, mocking the drunk undergrads.
g) Delicious boysenberry frozen yogurt topped with cookie dough, marshmallows, bits of waffle cone, and fresh raspberries.
h) Going to the used bookstore and buying (or rather letting Jeremy buy me): William Gibson's Idoru, Neil Stephenson's Snowcrash (because my lovely early 90s copy disappeared a while back), Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game (which our copy of has also wandered off), Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s Deadeye Dick, and a copy of Sartre's The Wall which was translated by Lloyd Alexander.
i) [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields arriving so that we could go to a show in the city that evening.
j) Quality time with Jeremy while [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields went to the movies.
k) Getting to the show at just the right time, Desa being great as ever, and Facing New York going predatory and completely draining my soul with their amazingness and seeming more awake than I have seen them in a long time. Also their being symbolic of everything about Contemporary Art(no matter the discipline) as a whole.
l) Art is not a science.
m) Cheese fries and mozzarella sticks at Denny's to recharge after the soul exfoliation.
n) Getting up at 9:15 Sunday morning, despite not getting home until 3:30 and reading Fables: Volume 9 and 1001 Nights of Snowfall while waiting for [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields to wake up.
o) Successful shopping trip for the beginning of [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields new wardrobe, in which she actually ended up with more stuff than [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and I, rather than the reverse.
p) Surprise date night with Jeremy, which included tasty fake Mexican and a margarita which ended up excitingly since I had failed to eat anything during the day.
q) Actually getting a full night's sleep for the first Sunday in ages.

2) I'm also behind on my TV, 2 weeks behind on Doctor Who and still haven't watched any of the NBC stuff since it returned. I am up to date on BSG and Bones though.

3) Why has no one ever mentioned to me the fact that 100 Years of Solitude is the most incest filled book ever?

4) I need a beta for a ASOIAF fic. It's Jaime/Brienne.
