Okay, so in the interest of giving WAYYY too much information, I've just got to say that once I did indeed shave the entire area, and was immediately depressed and couldn't stop crying. It was horrible, and I didn't feel better 'till it came back. These days my mantra is to keep the b-line trim and neat, and strictly with a razor. Also, Nair never worked, and waxing is damn painful. And expensive!
