The other day I caught A League of their Own on TV. I used to love that movie so much that someone bought me the VHS tape and I would come home from school every day and watch it. The real reason I am posting about it though is that I realize that I associate Marla Hooch very strongly with Brienne from ASoIaF. This is similar to the time I re-read Great Expectations and realized how I'd been thinking all along while reading the HP books that Ron Weasley = Herbert Pocket.

Littlefinger reminds me of Ryan O'Reilly from Oz. They both are sociopaths have no power base yet they pretty much control (or at least direct) everything that happens. They have no gangs/armies to back them up, yet every word out of their mouths causes chaos that ends with them getting what they wanted.

That's the only one I can think of at the moment.

I've never seen Oz but that sounds like it makes sense.

The prison in Oz is divided into gangs; you've got the black street gangs, the white supremacists, the Latino gangs, the Italian mob, the black muslims, the bikers, etc. They're all constantly in conflict for the drug trade and just because they're all bad men and they've got nothing else to do. Then you've got Ryan who's this skinny white guy who manages to convince them all that he's their friend/ally and play them off against each other, getting them to do his dirty work without realizing it.

He also falls in love with the prison doctor, and gets his retarded brother to kill her husband, which gets his brother sent to prison too. His poor brother ends up killing someone in prison to defend him and getting the death penalty. Yet this is Ryan and he somehow always gets what he wants: the doctor falls for him and by the time his brother is executed, she's "comforting" him by making out with him.

I really recommend the show, btw. I'd warn you about all the violence and sex and character deaths, but that seems pointless since you're into ASoIaF. :P

Hmmm... I see the bitterness and hatred for retention but I think ultimately Holden is much more of an idealist and a hypocrite.
