lodessa: lol (soiaf-jaime/brienne-in bed)

Woke up on the right side of the bed this week

1) I am really behind on my flist, but I had a great weekend:

a) Geeky Friday night of BSG and World of Warcraft with Jeremy and my brother.
b) Delicious homemade Macaroni and Cheese I had been craving but not making for a while.
c) A state of the union conversation with Jeremy that actually went somewhere.
d) Actually doing the laundry Saturday morning, and folding it.
e) Udon, Tempura, and Pot Stickers with Jeremy and [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix for Saturday's late lunch.
f) Some walking around on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, mocking the drunk undergrads.
g) Delicious boysenberry frozen yogurt topped with cookie dough, marshmallows, bits of waffle cone, and fresh raspberries.
h) Going to the used bookstore and buying (or rather letting Jeremy buy me): William Gibson's Idoru, Neil Stephenson's Snowcrash (because my lovely early 90s copy disappeared a while back), Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game (which our copy of has also wandered off), Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s Deadeye Dick, and a copy of Sartre's The Wall which was translated by Lloyd Alexander.
i) [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields arriving so that we could go to a show in the city that evening.
j) Quality time with Jeremy while [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields went to the movies.
k) Getting to the show at just the right time, Desa being great as ever, and Facing New York going predatory and completely draining my soul with their amazingness and seeming more awake than I have seen them in a long time. Also their being symbolic of everything about Contemporary Art(no matter the discipline) as a whole.
l) Art is not a science.
m) Cheese fries and mozzarella sticks at Denny's to recharge after the soul exfoliation.
n) Getting up at 9:15 Sunday morning, despite not getting home until 3:30 and reading Fables: Volume 9 and 1001 Nights of Snowfall while waiting for [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields to wake up.
o) Successful shopping trip for the beginning of [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields new wardrobe, in which she actually ended up with more stuff than [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and I, rather than the reverse.
p) Surprise date night with Jeremy, which included tasty fake Mexican and a margarita which ended up excitingly since I had failed to eat anything during the day.
q) Actually getting a full night's sleep for the first Sunday in ages.

2) I'm also behind on my TV, 2 weeks behind on Doctor Who and still haven't watched any of the NBC stuff since it returned. I am up to date on BSG and Bones though.

3) Why has no one ever mentioned to me the fact that 100 Years of Solitude is the most incest filled book ever?

4) I need a beta for a ASOIAF fic. It's Jaime/Brienne.

Yay for great weekends!

So, how good is Snowcrush? I read Stephenson's Baroque Cycle and some parts were really quite awesome, while the others... not so much. I'd like to read something more of his, but I'm not sure what to choose.

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Snowcrash is utterly amazing. I am not one to rhapsodize about prose but his is utterly stunning and the world he creates is convincing as all get out and the story is filled with awesome mythological stuff as well. There is a reason that I bought it twice (I think the only other book I've done that with was Game of Thrones). In other words, I very much suggest you read it.

Duly noted. Thanks ;D

To recommend a wonderful book to someone who will enjoy it is always a pleasure.

Oh! Oh! Fables! I am completely caught up! Let's talk! How great was 1001 Nights of Snowfall??

It sounds like a fantastic weekend!

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes Definitely! It was indeed seriously great. I think my favorite part was actually how the witch's story intertwined with all the rest and that she's totally primal because she is seriously fucking ancient. Especially since that means that she could totally undo Beast and Flycatcher's curses probably but chooses not to.

It totally was.

[identity profile] spectralbovine.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Frau Totenkinder is the shit. I loved seeing all the backstories; they added so many lovely layers to the characters.

You need to download to get caught up because the next arc is crazy cool and really important. And it's about Flycatcher!

Yes. Like finally finding out what was the deal with the dwarves!

I am going to hold out, because it will be just as awesome in June as now and I have gotten so used to the TP format.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't want them mentioned either if I'd had that kind of a past with the dirty little bastards.

I also liked King Cole's story; that was a deviously mean twist. And Fly's backstory was just so incredibly sad.

I am going to hold out, because it will be just as awesome in June as now and I have gotten so used to the TP format.
All right! If you can wait! The trades take so long to come out.

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, King Cole's story was seriously heartbreaking as was Fly's.

I'm used to waiting for novels, 6 months is not long, compared to 4 years.

[identity profile] spectralbovine.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, good point, but you get far less story in one trade than you do in one novel. It's dribs and drabs! Such is the way of comics.

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but that is why I refuse to read the singles. It's like 5 minutes worth of reading. At least the Trades are closer to an hour's worth.

[identity profile] zoeiona.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I could beta if you'd like...

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I very much would. I'm still messing with it a little but will email it to you by the end of the day. Do you have a preferred format for me to send it in?

[identity profile] zoeiona.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
A .doc or .rtf file would be best, I think.

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Great. I really appreciate this.

[identity profile] zoeiona.livejournal.com 2008-04-21 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. :)

Yay, you're reading One Hundred Years of Solitude -- it's one of my favorite books. (Mostly for reasons other than the incest.)

Sounds like a lovely weekend all around. And mmm, Denny's mozzarella sticks...

[identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had it in my "to read" stack for almost 2 years, but just now got around to actually reading it (partly because I have to sit at the allergist's for half an hour and I didn't want to bring in something low brow to read) but I am very much enjoying it. Marquez has a very distinctive tone that I'd forgotten how much I liked. I am probably going to finish it today or tomorrow, so we should have an in depth discussion then.

It really was. It was the first one in a long time that wasn't overly slothful or overly stressful.

I love mozzarella sticks so greatly, and they never taste better than after a night of being smashed in a crowd enjoying live music when you just need a total recharge.
