lodessa: lol (fables-ruined fairytale)

So last week I watched season 1 of BBC's Robin Hood series. And I ended up really liking it once I sort of got the hang of what they were doing. Possibly this has something to do with the fact that halfway through I realized that the guy playing Robin Hood looks a ridiculous amount like Eric Frederic, singer/songwriter/guitarist for Facing New York, whom I totally beyond admire who will be sort of the center point for my damned novel about singers as symbols if I ever get it written. But on top of that, if you find entertainment in the cracked out costuming ([livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix suggests it is costumed like a high school play, other running theories include a tabletop rpg player determining the costuming at random with charts and D20 dice, a blind person picking out the costumes, and a 4 year old being in charge of them) as opposed to fighting it and stop expecting it to be what it is not, you will enjoy the show. Robin is emo but it's in a nice way where he actually like has legitimate issues with the crusades and shit sometimes and also the show laughs at him a lot; there are plenty of slash options but that doesn't mean Marian gets relegated to obligatory damsel, in fact she's pretty proactive. It's sort of cracked out because one minute it's being gritty and cutting out tongues and the next it's making pop culture reference jokes. The best part is probably the Sheriff, who is an absolute sick fuck and brilliant in the role.

Now I really want to go see Facing New York and they are playing in Orangevale tonight (like seriously so close, I would not even have to get on the freeway) and they are playing with another band I like. Unfortunately everyone is supposedly coming over to play D&D tonight so I am sort of already booked. I am really tempted to flake on everyone though and possibly see if [livejournal.com profile] hella_em would want to go.

Additionally, I have been embroidering all weekend because [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix made me go into Michaels and the urge hit me. I love how it makes me feel like I am in a Jane Austen novel. [livejournal.com profile] sainfoin_fields may possibly be getting the most awesome present of all time... just saying.

Unintentional homage to Baz Luhrman by a blind 5 year old LARPer.

Aww, I heart Robin Hood. The costumes are ridiculous, to be sure, and the show is often made of crack, but I really do love it. IMO S2 is better than S1.

Me too. As I said in my post the best thing is to embrace the crack, because it's part of the love really.

Season 2 should be showing up via Netflix starting Tuesday... I am totally impatient.

I really want to watch Robin Hood. Next on my list is Life, but when have I ever obeyed my list?

I am all in favor of best presents of all time!

I vote yes on ignoring your list and watching Robin Hoodie. I think you will totally enjoy it too.

I cannot tell you exactly what said present is, but it involves needlepoint and our usual present theme.

our usual present theme

I think it says wonderful things about us that I can't be sure if you mean pink, alcohol, or dinosaurs.

Agreed though. For sure.

you should go see FNY tomorrow night in sf -- i'll be there!

Oh man. I totally want to, but I'm still fighting off this bacterial infection that caused me to miss work half of last week and now that I am in Folsom it's a two hour drive to SF instead of one hour each way and I have to get up at 5:30 as opposed to 7:30 in the mornings so it would probably be monumentally stupid of me.

I am sort of having an EFE renaissance. If I wanted to call and babble about it to you, is your number the same?

i simultaneously miss and am glad we're over the days when that occurred to us but didn't actually influence our decision about going to shows. :P

it's probably the same but just in case i'll send it you.

Yeah, of course this is why I feel weirdly disconnected from them half the time. But still, health and well being are a good thing.

Actually I totally had a cell number from when you were in Portland or something still, so good thing I checked.

sad, i didn't know FNY was on that bill. it would have been fun. plus, i am on your way to the venue, so we could have carpooled and had the mini-est road trip to a show ever...save maybe **chel's proximity to the pheonix, but then that's a walk trip really.

oh well, i was in the middle of a lake so i was powerless really. let's hit the boardwalk some time anyway...for a really crappy band, we'll just get drunk and stupid and have jeremy come pick us up before we have to throw down on some bitches. yeah!

Yay ^__^ What did you think? Guessing you haven't watched season 2 yet? ARe you all caught up on S4 of DW?

I enjoyed it a lot, although a couple episodes were a little cringey and I felt like a lot of the time people acted not from real characterization but for plot purposes. Not a huge Ianto fan. Wish there was more Tosh development. Strangely like Owen and think he is kind of like Alex Karev.

I'll be watching season 2 next month when the DVDs come out.

And yes, of course I am up to date on Who.

I love Owen, I think some of the episodes it just seems like the writers did not talk to each other at all, but the show runners did acknowledge that the show got rather rushed toward the end, because they didn't have enough time before it was supposed to start airing.

Oh cool, didn't know they had a release date already, now I wish I could just find one for Sarah Jane dvds.

Yay. What did you think of it all? (I have been away from LJ for a while) Mostly wondering about Silence in The Library Two parter and the last 3 eps of the season. (And the possible two new cast members for TW)

The keywords for this icon are "he wishes"

That makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, Sept. 16th. (Oct 7th for SJA)

I really really liked the season. I thought the Moffat two parter was creepy and heart wrenching and I love that eventually it was not about evil at all but about a lonely little girl trying to help. I mostly liked the finale but was annoyed that they brought Rose back to do nothing interesting with her and the Human!Ten setup felt too much like fanservice and badfic. I loved the DoctorDonna a lot and the interactions between all the different companions.

I was really excited by the possibility of Martha and Mickey on Tochwood but given that Freema is doing Law and Order:UK and there was an article with Noel Clarke that made it sound like he wasn't interested I am guessing it is totally not happening at this point.

Yay SJA!!!!!

I loved the two parter and I love that Moffat is taking over as head writer, that is going to be really interesting. And I loved the Doctor's wife, ooooh, and the Doctor's Daughter, so much fun, or at least I thought so.

THe DoctorDonna was magnificent, and I thought everyone together flying the Tardis was just beautiful, I need icons and wallpapers and headers of that scene so much ^__^

Okay Freema on L&O would be cool, but I was over the moon about Mickey joining TW, so that annoys me a bit.

Moffat always utilizes time travel in such great ways that I am totally excited to see what he will do.

L&O: UK seems awesome. It's with Freema and Jaime Bamber for BSG (who has very nice cheekbones). It's possible that Mickey will still join, that interview just made it seem unlikely.
