Back when I was writing my first HP fanfic, which was a comic and cute Marauders era fic, appropriately entitled "Pretty Pettiness" which has completely been Jossed by later books and was filled with OCs( because I didn't realize that it was taboo and you should always make all the characters gay and/or the biggest whores ever and makes people friends who hated eachother or didn't know eachother in canon rather than fill out the student ranks with OCs). qt_ninja and so I was making Slytherins and trying to think of ominous and/or mythology of some sort related names. So I went for an Odessey theme. After making "Gladiola Parkinson"'s best friend Scylla, I decided to not go with the obvious Circe or Calypso for Narcissa's sidekick, but derived the name Lodessa from the Lotus Eaters, the fruit of the Lotus makes you forget everything and go all lazy... it's totally a drug mataphor. Anyways, I named her Lodessa (thinking to change the T to a D thanks to the N64 game Ogre Battle and the evil empire being names Lodis in that) and made her last name Charybdis for the ship sucking monster. Orginally she was just going to be a petty vain haughty manipulative bitch. Within a few hundred words however, she started flirting with Snape unaccountably and then getting upset over him not paying attention to her. The next thing I knew she started being a sympathetic figure who was, much to her embarassment and everyone's confusion, totally in love with Snape but not brave enough as a teenager to admith it and risk her social status. (She also dated Remus in our heads between the time that they finished school and Lily and James died, adding to the whole them leaving him out thing because OMG he's dating a Slytherin!) Eventually I had to come up with a reason for Lodessa's intense love for Snape (who was supposed to be made miserably happy by her in the post-canon era) and that lead to a wonderful Atlantis past life story that was EPIC (something the LoVe shippers on my flist should appreciate). Anyways... Lodessa came to represent my Slytherin side... what I would be if you tweaked my essence until you got Slytherin instead of Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. I don't write that stuff much anymore, and initially I went by my Gryffindor OC (the Sirius girl of course because I used to be into that) Xenia, but Lodessa was a lot less cardinal and more interesting and the name was more unique and it was ambiguous enough to just sound genre-ish without being an exact reference that would be a problem if I switched fandoms.
Now I'm just attached to the name and like the sound of it.
