Okay, so shakanaman and I have a question for ya'll.

Did/Does your college have dining commons that everyone refers to them as "saga" rather than their proper name even though it's now owned by sodexho not saga?

Apparently Hampshire does, and St. Mary's definitely does...

Is it a small liberal arts college thing?

No, although our food was "catered" (I use quotation marks because it was the worst thing I have ever eaten including this one time I accidentally ate moldy bread; in fact it was so bad that it was a campus-wide joke) by Sodexho, we called our dining halls by their given names or nicknames (eg. Terrace = Terr-ASS because of the food quality).

I think probably you have to only have one for the "saga" term to apply. Once you have to differenciate clearly real-ish names are needed.

Sodexho caters all the schools... and all the prisons.

Yes!! Northwestern University, where I did my undergrad, has exactly this situation -- we called it Saga long after Sodexho bought it. It's not a gigantic school, but it's not a teeny liberal arts college either.

I am starting to suspect it is related to whether a school has multiple dining halls or not. If there are a bunch, people need to differenciate more and thus Saga is not an adequate explanation. It is still weird that so many places the name Saga stuck.

Whitman College has multiple dining halls, all known by the dorm they're housed in, except for the grill, which has longer hours and isn't located in a dorm but rather in the student center. It's known as Reid/RCC, the same as the student center.

Reed College has one dining hall, and it's known as Commons.

Both are small liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest.

It is an amazing school. Leave of absence and all aside, I feel so lucky to be going there and I only wished I had found it sooner. Whitman ... didn't work out. (I hated it so passionately.)

Yeah. Reed was my non-money related decision but I just couldn't pass up paid tuition and getting out of undergrad school without loans.
