1) Which Disney heroine (or hero) do you most identify with? Not which is your favorite or what movie do you prefer, who do you actually see yourself in?

2) Sign Ups are still open at [livejournal.com profile] asoiaf_equinox for another week. Please sign up so I don't feel like a loser... also because it will be fun I promise.

3) Wednesday night I read A Gathering of Gargoyles, the second book in Meredith Ann Pierce's Darkangel trilogy. Boyfriend should be bringing the last one home. In the mean time I am reading Closing Time some more. It still reads like amazing fanfic for Catch-22 written by someone who also loves Vonnegut and keeps flirting with the idea of a crossover.

Meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] etrangere

Come up with the craziest theory you can think of for any of my fandoms (ridiculous crossover theories a bonus) I know about, and I will explain why it makes perfect sense and is in fact probably true.

Arya is a Slayer.

Re: changed my mind, sorry

From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
Although it is not mentioned, clearly the creepy slayer memory dreams are part of why Arya is so messed up and sort of rabid. The Maesters are really the Watcher's Council (or at least a sect of them are) and Arya's blindness is part of an initiation/test in Westeros. After it, she will be trained with some difficulty and then end up being called when Asha (who is clearly the current slayer) is murdered by her uncle Euron while attempting to slay him (he gave up his humanity for power during his travels and became a demon host). The council will send her to deal with a vampire leader in the riverlands and it will turn out to be none other than her own mother's reanimated corpse. Everyone will praise her on a job well done but she will feel sick and run away to the Wall where she will help Jon defeat the Others (who are demons trying to escape crappy dimensions and invading theirs).

and on 1/ Lilo, from Lilo & Stitch, because she's awesome she's the only one I think act like a real little girl.

Awesome. I've never actually seen Lilo and Stitch all the way through for some reason but I can see that from the bits I have seen.

I asked the question because last night my dad mentioned he didn't get my fascination with Beauty and the Beast and I had to explain that I identified strongly with Belle who is bookish, a little out of step with everyone else, and who just wants more than the pedestrian life she is born to.

Jasmine's my favourite, and I do see a lot of myself in her, too, but the most straightforward identifying probably goes to Megara. 'Cause she's bitter. She's been burned in the past, and she's jaded and sarcastic because of it, but deep down, she still wants to believe in true love and miracles happening.

Date: 2008-02-08 05:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
I love Jasmine too, but I realize I am nothing like her. I'm not feisty and defiant. I probably would never have run away from the palace and I would probably have liked one of the charming Princes that came to court me. Also I lack an awesome tiger.

Megara is always interesting because she is a woman instead of a girl in a lot of ways that the other heroines aren't.

CERVANDO KILLED FELIX.

Date: 2008-02-08 06:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
Cervando was actually obsessed with Molly Fitzpatrick and killed Felix over it (or he was in love with Felix and was upset because his feelings weren't returned. Thumper only took the credit to make him seem more bad ass and also took advantage of it to get an in with the Fitzpatricks. ALternatively, Thumper covered up for Cervando because he was in love with him. Either way, the Fitzpatricks eventually did find out the truth and the bus crash was caused by them... in a seeming pattern it was just a false boast when Cassidy said he did.

RETCON for the win.

My favourite, as you can see from my icon, is Snow White (Shrek version). However, since you've asked who is most like me, I have to say Cinderella because of my being manipulated by my family (I even have a couple of "ugly sisters" now!). I try to avoid thinking about this parallel between me and Cindy, though, and even wrote a story (my 2007 NaNo project) in which the ugly sisters were the good ones and Cinderella was the bitch.

Anyway, crazy theory: Temperance Brennan is actually from the planet Skyron, in the galaxy of Andromeda.

Date: 2008-02-08 06:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
*hugs* I don't know what is taking your Fairy Godmother so long.

Well that Brennan is an alien is pretty obvious. Her overly analytic way of looking at the world is alien, her curiosity of cultural anthropology is that of an outsider trying to understand a discovered system, not to mention the weird circumstances of her family life make it really easy to believe that she is a changeling since it's not like foster parents were going to notice and by the time she reconnects with her family they can assume the change is because of time past and life experiences.

I probably see the most of myself in Belle, like you (for many of the same reasons -- bookish and with a general sense of being different from people around me, and I'm sure if I lived in a town which only had "provincial life" to offer I'd be bored out of my skull). But it's more by the process of elimination than a strong intrinsic resonance, you know? She is not my favorite heroine (those would be Mulan and Ariel), and Beauty and the Beast is not at all my favorite movie, so it's a bit weird. (And I tend to like villains better anyway, a lot of the time :)

Date: 2008-02-08 06:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
Mulan is clearly more awesome than the rest. Kyle was trying to argue that she is similar to Jasmine but she is really more like Belle with the not fitting in... except she's an actual hero and takes things into her own hands instead of being a victim or a vehicle for another's change.

Crazy theory: Angela Montenegro is a time lord.

Date: 2008-02-08 07:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
Canonically Angela has a hard time staying anywhere for a long time, she has difficulty commiting, she is as they say a free spirit. That is because she is a Time Lady. Unfortunately someone stole her Tardis so she is stuck in the 20th/21st century. Part of her attraction to Hodgins is that he has the resources and the crazy to both be able to effectivly track down the Tardis and to believe her that it exists. She doesn't tell him she's an alien though and when he succeeds in finding her TARDIS and she reveals the truth and invites him to come along as his companion he won't be sure whether to be hurt that she didn't tell him or excited about the space and time thing.

I've only ever seen a handful of Disney movies (The Lion King, 101 Dalmatians, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Hercules, Toy Story... and that would be all, iirc), and I've never really identified myself with any of the characters. I was mostly in for the songs XD

Crazy theory: Tywin Lannister's wife actually gave birth to triplets, not twins, and that third child is Lindsay Bluth.

Date: 2008-02-08 07:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
Yeah I think it's different if you didn't grow up with them.

Well to state the obvious: Lindsey looks like a Lannister, she thinks like a Lannister, and she'd be happier as a Lannister. Unfortunately triple births are considered unlucky in Westeros so she had to be secreted away because otherwise people would think there was a curse on the house. When Joanna became pregnant again, the draughts the maesters gave her to assure that she wouldn't repeat the shame caused Tyrion's defects because they stunted development and messed with the genes. They also messed with Joanna's immune system and led indirectly to her death. One day soon, Lindsey will return to Westeros, call out Cersei as an impostor, and take her place as Tywin's true daughter. She will have an incestuous relationship with Tyrion. But Dany will be okay with it because the Targaryens are into incest.

Temperance Brennan is Illyria in disguise.

(Also, I think that A:tS and Queer as Folk is actually one TV series, but that's my pet theory! ;D)

I had a thing for Belle and for Pocahontas and Mulan, I think... Although I don't think I did all that much identifying. I was more into identifying with book characters at the time, and I tended to be sympathetic of villains ;)

Well there's the whole overly analytical and lacking in human compassion element that makes that plausible. Especially since clearly whatever happened right after Not Fade Away rendered her and Angel both human and deprived them of their memories. So she just knows there is truth she must uncover and he feels drawn because there is some familiarity he cannot explain about her.

(I've never watched QaF so I don't know really)

I think a lot of it has to do with the context you were exposed to them in.

Disney hero:
I'm having a hard time picking between Wendy (Peter Pan) because I've always wanted to stay on safer territory, at the risk of not growing or challenging myself; Alice (Alice in Wonderland) because feel like I'm often throw into a world of confusing and arbitrary rules, and that behind it somewhere should be a world of possibility without punishment; and Violet (The Incredibles) because I am shy and doubt myself, and stay very introverted, but still possess abilities that would no doubt shine brighter if I were brave enough to use them.

I'd probably go with Alice in the end, but it's a pretty fair split between the group.

Esmeralda, definitely. Mostly because she always speaks out against injustice, even when it's probably not the most logical thing to do, she attracts sadistic men, and she's a dancer.

A.) Belle--her biggest weekly thrill is a trip to the library and she's able to love the Beast ( I think he was sexier as a beast, anyway).

B.) Let's go with...Illyria was the one that destroyed Old Valyria (they even sort of rhyme.)

Date: 2008-02-08 10:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lodessa.livejournal.com
I think many people find the Beast's transformation disturbing.

Illyria, missing her armies, searches through dimensions for a people worthy of her command. The Valaryians seem initially like a good fit, what with the dragons and the awesome swords, but they don't understand that only she is allowed to throw temper tantrums and she destroys them all because they are getting on her nerves in a fit of rage. The Targaryens, safe in Westeros, survive because she can't be bothered to hunt them down.
