Oh Doctor Who! I feel like I 95% love you, but then there are times when I feel that you are totally atrocious and despicable. Why you gotta harsh my squee?

So I was ridiculously happy to see Martha Jones, and she's a Doctor now and she is still awesome. And Donna's reaction about how Ten made her a soldier and his realization that he totally did, it killed me with perfection. But, then Martha spent the rest of the time being easily tricked and used as a weapon against everyone for the rest of the two parter. I did love that the Doctor knew the difference just by looking at her, because Martha is important to him and he knows every detail of things like that about her. I just... Then, when in "The Doctor's Daughter" she got immediately captured/separated, I was going to scream. But she did get to be awesome and doctor the Hath. Really seperating them sort of allowed us to see how awesome she is on her own. I loved her departure, resolute but torn up inside, and her exchange with Donna.

Martha is different than the other companions we've seen in New Who. Rose and Donna needed something worth living for, something to transform their unsatisfactory lives, but Martha already was working on an awesome life and already had purpose and meaning. I think that's why it makes me so upset to see Who-verse constantly try to destroy her heart and soul. There's a price to be paid for traveling with the Doctor, and we can see why it's worth it for Rose and for Donna, but there's a reason Martha says enough, and it's painful to see that for all that she's still being pulled. I love Martha, and I want to see more of her, but I kind of understand why some people wish that they would just leave her well enough alone.

It's about more than Martha though. The way the show treats her makes me question its ideology and consider that possibly the whole thing is totally misogynistic. And I don't want to think that. So I am going to focus on the other things.

Donna continues to be awesome, and I really liked her interactions with Jenny as well as Martha and how she calls the Doctor on his shit and doesn't side with him when he is a jerk to the people around him, particularly other women. So that's a plus. Actually, in general they seem to have had female companions laugh at the Doctor with each other instead of fight over him.

The moment where she took out a stethoscope (although I am confused as to where she got it from) and listened to Jenny's two hearts and then the Doctor's reaction and the mention of his family (seriously something he never mentions) was really touching. I'm excited by the prospect of Jenny pop back up, because once again he isn't all alone anymore (also because she was adorable and spunky and totally Ten-like really). Which is interesting because before watching any of this I was thinking about that idea yesterday. Because, sure the Doctor is sad about his people being destroyed, but he's also kind of a narcissist and he enjoys being "the last". Also because I am sort of looking forward to the day when they decide to bring Romana back; because, I've never seem Classic Who but she seems awesome and the Doctor cheats so much and it would be nice to see him face an equal.

Which reminds me, that I actually am realizing that I really like when there are three of them. I liked Nine/Rose/Jack, and Ten/Martha/Jack, and I now really enjoyed Donna/Martha/Ten and Donna/Jenny/Ten, because the Doctor does just sort of bowl over one human, no matter how awesome, but when there are two of them the dynamic changes and they can choose each other sometimes instead of him, or just have the advantage of not being alone. This is why I love that scene where he is talking about how the TARDIS cloaking works and Jack turns to Martha and is like "You too, eh." So, more double companions, especially with Donna who likes to mock the Doctor more than most.

Now to find somewhere to download the last two episodes of BSG so as not to inconvenience [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and be caught up with the TV I am actually trying to keep up with these days.

I don't think I have anything useful to say, but I found this post interesting, and Martha and Donna both rock, and very good point about the different dynamic when the Doctor has two humans around.
