Okay, so I want to get back into fandom, but it's been so long and I don't really feel fic-ish about any of the things I am watching right now (Life, Bones, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse, Battlestar Galactica, and Legend of the Seeker) and well truthfully I started in a book fandom and that's what I really crave, a few years to muck around between canon changes. But there doesn't really seem to be much in the way of book fandoms going on (dammit I deeply want there to be a Dresden Files fandom). And basically I have no idea what people are into these days, and prior to leaving I was getting pretty into Doctor Who fandom but now is sort of a weird time for that with hiatus and doctor change after that etc. So please flist, give me your advice.

I've really never been able to get into TV fandoms. Even if I flipping adore the series and there is a huge fandom for it -- like Firefly or Veronica Mars -- I still never really get in. I don't know why -- somehow it's just harder with such a fluid canon.

I like book fandoms, though. Book fandoms are nice. I just wish some of my series had larger ones.

Have you read Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series? I think you might like it. There's a small fandom attached to it, but man, could it use some better new blood.

Yeah, generally I realize that I've written mostly over summer hiatus with TV fandoms, or on the edges with minor characters or past fic that were unlikely to be effected by the week to week new canon. Because I am a book fandom girl at heart, I want a few years to mull things over. But there are few active and sizable book fandoms and I am way past done with Harry Potter and uninterested in Lord of the Rings, and hell no I would never consider that Twilight drivel.

For a while I was making the Song of Ice and Fire thing work, but I don't know... I feel hesitant to go back there and I really want a bigger/more active fandom.

I have not read the Kushiel books, perhaps I will check them out though. I feel like my mother was reading them last year possibly.

I think my problem with the ASoIaF fandom is part GRRM's dicking us around (and treating his fans like crap), and part that so many people in that fandom are just way too intense for me. Which, I guess, was part of HP fandom, too, I just never ran into it. I had my nice little corner of HP fandom and people were very cool and chill there. The ASoIaF discussion boards scare me, and since GRRM is so anti-fanfic, it's hard to find outlets for my preferred method of fandom interaction.

You should definitely give Kushiel a try -- it's epic like ASoIaF, only with more sex, less battle, and more intrigue. Carey's developed a really great, broad world, which is always my favourite thing in a series -- I like a world that has enough room for me to play in it. :)

Yeah, the ASOIAF fic community is super insular because of the author disapproval and that makes it hard.

Well that sounds super appealing for sure.

You could always join [community profile] westerosorting if you were in the mood to reconnect with your ASOIAF fannishness (it really is quite a lot of fun) :)

Beyond that, yeah... I'm bummed by the general lack of Dresden Files fandom (and what there is of it seems more TV show centric). It's pretty similar for Temeraire, too...

I probably will. Just need to ease back into things.

But yeah, seriously disappointed in the lack of Dresden Files fandom (while I would perfer book fandom I would seriously go for TV show fandom as well even). Although maybe I will just start trying to write for it and see if it turns out there is interest after all, just no organization. Although it's hard to work where to start when there is no fandom going on.

Meh. I apparently am done with formal fandom for the moment. You should just randomly pontificate about BSG and ASOIAF and shades of gray and the meaning of life and omg Cersei Lannister is a cylon okay no she is so not, she is like the least cylon person ever but fic who needs fic there is CRACK in my head and also wine omg we should go to Napa when it stops raining.

That in no way answers the question. Though I do think you might like the Kushiel books, at least the first three that I read.

scratch that, we should go to Sonoma. someone in my office just went to Calistoga which I think is Napa. But I will take your word on where to go.

Cersei Lannister would be a terrible cylon wouldn't she? Littlefinger and Baltar might make an interestingly backstabby team though.

Yes, we should definitely go wine tasting soon now that the weather is getting better!

I'd love a book fandom, but there's been nothing for me since HP and there's nothing on the horizon (that I know of). I'd really like to connect with a new TV show fannishly because I miss that. I guess I am sort of involved in Gossip Girl, but this season has been so boring that I'm mostly kind of Whatever about it. I need a new Veronica Mars or a new Harry Potter or something, sigh.

So I know how you feel!

Reading this comment it occurs to me that you would probably really appreciate The Dresden Files books, since they are like a cross between Harry Potter and Veronica Mars (only for grown ups) : noir detective also happens to be a wizard. Really great fast and exciting reads and there's also the short lived TV show which is also good although not the same.

Yeah, that does sound as if it would be right up my alley. I'll try to grab the first one the next time I'm at the library! Thanks so much for the recommendation!

BTW, are you on goodreads?

Coolness, I've just sent you a friending request. I feel as if I should apologize in advance for my truly appalling reading habits, but oh well.

Yay. And don't worry, my reading habits are all over the place... last year I read mostly graphic novels for instance.
