lodessa: lol (t:scc-john and cameron)
A few days ago, looking through [livejournal.com profile] who_daily I came across the vid Mood Rings(Doctor Who: Ten/Martha/Donna/Rose) by [livejournal.com profile] anagraphic and while watching it I was torn in two for a minute. The vidding itself is very good but I was really bothered by the actual song choice. The id part of me found it adorable and cute, but the thinking rational part of me was extremely aggravated, by the entire premise of the song but specifically in light of Doctor Who and Ten especially. The underlying assumptions were like rubbing salt in an open wound. Because we all know that Martha, Donna, and Rose are OVERLY EMOTIONAL TICKING TIME BOMBS and poor Ten is SO INCAPACITATED BECAUSE THEY ARE PRETTY. Because, guys that is how girls are right? But it's okay, because they are pretty and make nice arm ornaments. And their being crazy people is the problem, not that perhaps THE DOCTOR IS AN ALIEN and maybe doesn't completely get certain things about being human. But seriously, the companions in question are not particularly hysteric, I would even say that the reverse is true, and last time I checked it is Ten who GETS AWAY WITH MURDER because people find him oh so special. Anyway, that the song exists speaks to the existence of this mentality in our culture, but I think we all know that already. It is supposed to be funny and cute to talk about how girls are so pretty but so crazy but... really all it is is more of the last panel of this. And that comic is amazing, but because it is pointing out a ridiculous thing, not being it.

The actual plot for Castle this week was not as amazing, but I still really am enjoying the show and especially the stuff with his daughter.

Castle - Episode 1x03 )

The Sarah Connor Chronicles continues to be amazing and wow me every week.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronoicles - Episode 2x19 )

Dollhouse is still problematic but now in an interesting and possibility good way that makes me excited to keep watching, instead of in a waiting for it to be something more than meh way.

Dollhouse - Episode 1x06 )

I found the BSG finale to be better if I didn't connect the dots and just looked at the immediate images and let them resonate in my brain instead of trying to follow the path of the show. I will probably post about it in more detail later.

I finally started to watch Dexter this week after being told to do so for a long time and actually owning season 1 for almost a year. I have watched the first two episodes now, and I am hooked. It is just so bizarrely engrossing.

I also finally gave in to the temptation and ordered my first BPAL. This is all [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix's fault since yesterday she was like "I'm playing with my BPAL, come play with me". And then my wrists smelled like cinnamon honey-sticks. Which of course made me want actual honey-sticks but neither the natural foods store nor Whole Foods had them, (Fuck you Whole Foods; this is just another way in which you are inferior to Wild Oats) Anyway. I ordered a bottle of Bhagdad (which is what I was wearing yesterday) and imps of Frumious Bandersnatch, March Hare, Lady Macbeth, Juke Joint, Bengal, and Siren.

Last night we watched Castle, and we laughed out loud and enjoyed it greatly. Seriously Nathan Fillion I adore you forever (see: sitting through Slither and not hating him at all in Waitress) and it was so nice to just enjoy something for being enjoyable. Of course that just made me wish Dollhouse was better than it is (not hating on, just underwhelmed). Seriously, David Boreanaz, Summer Glau, Alyson Hannigan, and Nathan Fillion are all rocking the shiny awesome new shoes and Eliza Dushku can't? When she is the one with Joss Whedon? I call foul.

Here, have a Doctor Who gen vid to Regina Spektor (spoilers for Season 4): The Call

Also, I just finished up reading Allison Croggon's Pellinor Series and while there is definitely room for it to have been more awesome, I found myself super pleased it existed. It is, at last, a book one can give to a teen/tween girl that is an epic fantasy with a female hero, which is both totally safe in both the sense of it does not espouse messed up gender/relationship ideas (I'm looking at you Twilight) and that it has no possibly protective parent angering content (much as I like the sex and multiple partners in The Lioness Quartet). Also I really loved the characters and sort of wanted to write fic about them while reading last night. So next time you are looking for something give a young lady in your life, I strongly suggest these books.
lodessa: lol (dr. who-ten/jack-hugfest)
In conclusion: Doctor Who vids are still all about hug montages, as is right and proper.

PS. Have decided to write Dresden Files Fic after all, already have three plot bunnies. One is bittersweet gen about brotherlove and the others are Murphy/Sanya and Susan/Luccio(I kid you not).
lodessa: lol (dr. who-ten/martha)
After dealing with a few hours of stupidity in the World of Warcraft... I am supremely happy to have my Doctor Who dvds back from Davis because earlier [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and I watched vids (in that terrible youtube clicky way) and even terrible ones remind me how much I really love Martha Jones always and forever and now I can curl up and watch Season 3 with warm spiced apple cider and embroidery.

To follow: a lesson on pronouns and POV, which the internet obviously needs.

Author's Notes:: Written for [livejournal.com profile] vanitashaze for the [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon. Apologies for the lateness.

This was a hard place, clawing your way up the ranks would take nerves of steel. And you could see it, under the soft skin and shiny hair, there was something hard about Martha Jones, strong but cruel, like scar tissue. )

Title: To Hold
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: NC-17
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Ten, Martha/Tom
Word Count: 2,690
Summary: Martha is still haunted by her feelings for Ten and confused as to what bearing this has on her engagement to Tom. About two steps from PWP, this was written for the porn.

Logically, Martha knew that the shivers down her spine at his kiss were more about anticipation and the way she'd been pressed up against him for the last hour than the actual kissing. )
lodessa: lol (torchwood)
1) I totally hate work. I am tired of being everyone's bitch. I am tired of my lack of motivation. I am tired of pretending things are other than this.

2) I may have uploaded about two to three times as many Torchwood icons as I actually want today. I will delete/change most of them out in the next few weeks I am sure, but I couldn't resist the shiny.

3) I still need to find Robin Hoodie icons, but may wait until next week as the season 2 dvds are coming via netflix today and I don't want to be spoiled (I mean more than the obvious). If anyone has suggestions for good icon makers in the fandom I'd love suggestions though. I am looking for ones with interesting(and not ugly) text and all I am turning up are either beautiful but useless icons or ones with ugly and/or stupid text.

4)Today is a great day for Doctor Who vids, I seriously recommend:

[livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro's Shut up and Drive (Martha > You).
[livejournal.com profile] flummery's Handlebars (Ten's cause is noble and his motives are pure but yikes).

5)Meme, sort of stolen from [livejournal.com profile] entrangere: Pick any 5 of my livejournal tags and I will explain them. Then, repost, if you want, so that I can do the same for you.

Fandom, Entitlement, and Creator Hate

Not so long ago, I was discussing with [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix how I've never really gotten creator hate. I mean sure I sometimes think that Ron D. Moore is utterly bonkers or just plain wrong and I think that Rob Thomas made some very poor choices and I hope he learned his lesson about fanservice, but that disappoints me in the show, it doesn't make he feel wrathful and betrayed. A lot of other people seem to take showrunner decisions (or even writer decisions that they blame on the showrunner) as a grave personal insult when they don't like them. They feel that Joss Whedon or Russell T. Davies or J.J Abrams owes them something and/or that their personal preferences and opinions actually effect writer decisions. Both these ideas seem so terribly entitled. Until you start personally financing a show, you don't have a right to demand anything from the show. And honestly, even if show runners are effected by what fandom as a whole is saying, it's unlikely they are reacting to you specifically and really I sort of wish they wouldn't react to fandom at all... because fanservice pretty much always turns out terribly (I'm looking at you Rob Thomas and Russell T. Davies). But really it comes down to this, sure I get upset about things that happen on shows. After all, I actually stopped watching The Office, mostly because of a minor character's plotline. But that's my choice and I can either decide to roll with the changes or stop watching the show, no one is making me be a fan. I'm not a yes woman. I look at my shows and texts critically, but I know my place in relation to these works is one of observer, not participant. It I want something done my way, I'd better do it myself.

On that note, I found Doctor Who's season 4 finale to be rather underwhelming, but here are my mostly positive thoughts on it by character. Because I do adore the damned show and there were a lot of little pleasing things mixed in. )

So maybe I've been playing quite a bit of Dungeons and Dragons since 4th Edition came out and I cut myself off from World of Warcraft and livejournal for a month and a half.

So all in all I really like 4th Edition. It's much more easily comprehensible than previous editions and simpler to play. It would definitely be a good time to bring in someone who has never played before. The customizable nature of the classes, while reeking a little of WoW influence, makes you feel more in control of your destiny. I also enjoy that, while a cleric is really nice to have, you don't actually need one.

Also in our group (cycling in and out in some cases, for instance my elf never plays when the half elf is around) if you want to ask questions about how they play: Dwarven Paladin (Davis), Dwarven Wizard (Robert), Dwarven Cleric(Davis), Dwarven Ranger(Kyle-my brother), Human Warlock([livejournal.com profile] actoplasm), and Half-Elf Warlord([livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix.

My main complaint so far is a minor one that does not effect the mechanics of gameplay. It is about the new alignment system. You can no longer be lawful evil or chaotic good. Which makes me really sad. I miss chaotic neutral less as only dicks played that.

Ps. Yes, I'm back

Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha, Jack, Shakespeare (and various pairing combinations of them all)
Word Count: 778
Rating: PG
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix who asked for: "Martha/Shakespeare, Martha/Jack, Martha studying for her stupid boards and getting taken away to the beach on another world by a Doctor who doesn't tease or get her hopes up for once, just shares girly drinks and helps her build a sandcastle out of pink sand." This is a little in the middle of those options.

Oh Doctor Who! I feel like I 95% love you, but then there are times when I feel that you are totally atrocious and despicable. Why you gotta harsh my squee?

In other words I watched 4x04 through 4x06 )

Now to find somewhere to download the last two episodes of BSG so as not to inconvenience [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and be caught up with the TV I am actually trying to keep up with these days.

Characters/Pairings: Martha/Ten, Jack
Rating: PG-13

Warnings: Not season 4 canon compliant, not betaed.
Notes: I started this fic back in January but never got around to finishing it. Last week I suddenly wanted to, despite not having watched past 4x03 (or any of Torchwood) and knowing that it had probably been jossed. So it’s not canon complaint for season 4, and it’s not actually the fic I set out to write (Martha was going to be more victorious), but I’ve written it and I sort of like it anyway, so I’m posting it regardless.

He shows up just before exams and it’s all Martha can do not to fall under his spell and go with him wherever he asks )

Bones 3x14 - The Wannabe in the Weeds )

2 Weeks Behind on BSG
3 Weeks Behind on Doctor Who

Which of course means I picked back up a Doctor Who fic I started in January, which I am suspecting has been jossed, but seem to want to write without catching up on Who/watching Torchwood and seeing if minor tweaks are needed and might make it canon compliant.

1. Monday night, [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix flaked out on watching Bones with me. It was okay though because she was writing her [livejournal.com profile] asoiaf_equinox fic:

Somewhat spoilery reactions to 'Player under Pressure' (mostly bitching about it not airing till now)  )

2. Tuesday night, we watched episodes 4x02 and 4x03 of Doctor Who at last. Non-spoilerly reactions (comments to this post may contain spoilers though):
* Ten's emo seems expand with the growth of his hair.
* Donna is a great choice of character to follow up Martha and Rose. I love that she is an independent adult. If Rose was Heart and Martha was Head... Donna is perhaps Will.
* [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix and I loved Quintus and his short little sacrilegious purple toga.
* This reminded us that Brutus and Mark Antony are totally having hatesex and we are sad that NO ONE has written about it for us.
* We want to hire that chick to do our PR. We are not sure for what, but we were impressed with her skills.
* The promo for this week, made me so excited. I am such a fucking fangirl for a certain champion of Earth.

3. Last night, after arguing with my therapist about semantics, we went out to celebrate [livejournal.com profile] actoplasm's promotion. He didn't get off till 8 and 9 is Jeremy's bedtime for work nights so we were just going to have drinks and appetizers with them and then go and let them finish their dinner alone... but it smelled good so I got mushroom ravioli in a ginger cream sauce and Jeremy got a giant chicken caesar salad. We also modified the "Red Carpet" (one of their specialty drinks: Pomegranate Liqueur, Vodka, Triple-Sec, Sweet and Sour, and Soda) to replace the Soda with their homemade ginger ale, which really killed the not so great vodka aftertaste (they make notoriously strong drinks). We called it the "Ginger Carpet"... which sounded dirty and reminded me of Doctor Who and my theory that he is hanging out with Donna partly because if you can't BE a ginger then you can at least be WITH one, right? It was so good I had two, and then we forgot to order dessert but [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix wanted some so we went over to the Czechoslovakian place's bar, where they serve Princess Cake and make the best Mojitos in town (seriously I don't even bother getting them elsewhere in the area because they always disappoint). We did not get to bed until 11, and have plans to do Happy Hour today in honor of [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix's last day of actual class in law school. Also in honor of cheap appetizers.

4. This week I have written 3 Song of Ice and Fire fics (Well, 2 1/2 fics and 1 ficlet) and I am actually pretty happy with the completed ones for the first time in months. I've even been getting betaed again for the first time in a while.

5. Saturday we leave for Southern California and will not be back until Thursday or Friday of next week. I am so excited to get away and not go to work.
lodessa: lol (dr. who-ten-deranged)

In conclusion, once again they manage to do a really good character transition.

In other news:

I am probably dropping The Office
lodessa: lol (dr. who-martha-end of the world)
This is driving me totally insane. Someone on my flist has an icon of Ten looking deranged and ordering the "human womans" into his TARDIS. I thought it was [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix but apparently I was imagining it. So please whoever you are... TELL ME.

For [livejournal.com profile] silver_fic an actual drabble

Martha Calls Ten At Last )
lodessa: lol (dr. who-ten/martha-only one bed)
Okay so I don't write RPF (well except for that one time where I wrote [livejournal.com profile] hobviously/Bernard Black but that's different because one of the characters was fictional and one was someone I actually know no WTF that was [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix not me and I wrote [livejournal.com profile] hobviously/Rashida Jones. Brain, why do you desert me?)

So when I saw the pictures of David Tennant and Freema Agyeman daring me to ship them at the National Television Awards I wasn't going to write the Real Person Lies that begged to be written. But thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix's comments I am posting what I would write about them... if I wrote RPF.

Theoretical RFP. Read at your Own Risk. )
lodessa: lol (btvs-faith-vibrant)
1) If you have not seen these adorable pictures of David Tennant and Freema Agyeman you really need to. If you have already seen them, maybe you want to look again (especially at the shot where he is totally staring down her dress). He looks disheveled and she looks gorgeous and they are both so expressive and interactive. It's really rekindling my Martha love and making me want to write sappy fluffy Martha/Ten. Also it makes me want to be Freema because she is so radiant and gorgeous. Basically squee.

2)And then just when I thought that nothing could make be feel more bubbly and happy than those pics: Joss is coming back to Television and it's with Eliza Dushku! There are obviously concerns about the fact that it is Fox (which as [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix pointed out it means it is sort of like watching someone you care about get back together with their crazy ex again). But they do seem reformed somewhat (like the whole not having canceled Bones thing) and they've committed to 7 episodes, not just a pilot. Mainly it is Joss Whedon making a show with Eliza Dushku and I cannot see any possible way that could not be for the win.

3) Also yesterday I went to a class on preparing Grant Proposal Budgets and Budget Justifications and for the first time I could see a part of my job as sort of like constructing an essay, what with the gathering evidence and such. It was so refreshing and made me actually want to do something for work.

4)Overall this is putting me in such a good mood that I am offering drabble/ficlets to everyone. Please put in requests while the cheerful outlook stays with me. Any canon I am familiar with, any pairing or genfic.

Besides, that would be giving up, whereas these nights they have are just a little bit of cheating, like chocolate cake snuck sometimes while on a diet. )
lodessa: lol (dr. who-ten/martha-only one bed)
I am still two episodes from the end of the most recent season of Dr. Who, but I am really feeling the Martha love. I dreamed about her last night and this morning was composing sad Martha fic in my head (which will have to wait till I watch the the last two episodes to get written). If Rose was heart then Martha is head and yet she does not have the flatness that might cause. She's not emotionally disconnected, overly clinical, snobby, or impractical. She's very tangible and someone that I at least find the easiest of any of the characters to empathize with. She has a life before the Doctor's arrival and she isn't afraid to admit that she has feelings for him. She has something to lose and yet cannot resist the lure of adventure. Of course I love Rose, but I could never be her. Martha serves me much better for self insertion. Which isn't her only purpose, but is significant. She's much more confident, open, and many other things than I am of course. But she fits into my personal subheading even if I would never actually do some of the things she does.
